Wedding Stationery Glossary

Key Terms Every Couple Should Know

Wedding stationery comes with its own language, from paper textures to printing methods, and it’s completely normal for couples to feel a little lost at first. Understanding the terminology not only helps you make confident decisions, but also ensures your stationery reflects your style, values, and vision for the day.

At Willow & Ink, we believe in keeping things simple, transparent, and sustainable. This glossary breaks down the most common wedding stationery terms so you can navigate the process with ease.

Paperstock

Paperstock refers to the type of paper used for your invitations, signage, menus, and other stationery pieces. Different paperstocks vary in texture, weight, finish, and sustainability.
We use a curated range of high‑quality, sustainably sourced, including textured, recycled, and uncoated options that are beautiful, tactile, and planet‑friendly.

GSM (Grams Per Square Metre)

GSM is a measurement of paper weight. The higher the GSM, the thicker and sturdier the paper feels.
Typical ranges:

  • 250–300gsm → Ideal for invitations and signage
  • 120–170gsm → Great for inserts, order of service pages, and menus
  • 350gsm+ → Premium, ultra‑thick options for statement pieces

Choosing the right GSM helps your stationery feel luxurious without unnecessary waste.

Vellum

Vellum is a translucent, frosted paper often used for overlays, wraps, or decorative layers. It adds softness and elegance without overwhelming the design.
Modern vellum is typically made from plant-based materials rather than animal products, making it a beautiful and ethical choice.

Foiling / Foil Stamping

Foiling adds metallic accents, such as gold, silver, or rose gold, by using heat and pressure. It creates a luxurious, reflective finish.
While stunning, foiling can affect recyclability, so we help couples choose where it adds the most impact with the least waste.

Digital Printing

Digital printing is the most common and eco‑friendly printing method. It uses water‑based or low‑impact inks and produces crisp, vibrant results with minimal waste.
This is our preferred method for most designs due to its sustainability and consistency.

Matte vs. Gloss Finish

  • Matte: Soft, non‑shiny, and easy to recycle
  • Gloss: Shiny and reflective, but often harder to recycle due to coatings

We typically recommend matte or uncoated finishes for couples prioritising sustainability.

Insert Cards

These are additional cards included with your invitation suite, such as RSVP cards, accommodation details, or timelines.
We help couples minimise the number of inserts by combining information or offering digital RSVP options to reduce paper use.

Envelope Liners

Decorative papers placed inside envelopes to add colour or pattern.
They’re beautiful but optional, and we offer recyclable, sustainably sourced options for couples who want the detail without the guilt.

Wax Seals

Wax seals add a romantic, traditional touch to invitations.
We use flexible, mailable wax that doesn’t crack and can be removed so the envelope remains recyclable.

Calligraphy / Hand Lettering

Calligraphy refers to hand‑written or hand‑styled lettering used for names, envelopes, or signage.
We offer digital calligraphy styles that mimic the beauty of hand lettering while keeping the process efficient and sustainable.

Flat vs. Folded Cards

  • Flat cards: Single-sided or double-sided, simple and elegant
  • Folded cards: Open like a book, offering more space for information

Both can be printed on sustainable paperstocks and recycled after use.
